Mara Jade Skywalker was taken into Imperial service at a young age and trained as one of Emperor Palpatine’s personal operatives, carrying the title Emperor’s Hand. She served as an assassin, spy, infiltrator, and Force-sensitive agent whose missions often placed her beyond the normal Imperial chain of command. Palpatine communicated with Mara across great distances through the Force and conditioned her loyalty so deeply that one of his final commands remained embedded in her mind after the Empire’s collapse: she was to kill Luke Skywalker. With her former purpose gone, Mara survived through smuggling and eventually worked for Talon Karrde, becoming one of the most capable members of his organization. Mara’s path crossed Luke’s repeatedly during the campaign surrounding Grand Admiral Thrawn, forcing her to work beside the man she had been conditioned to hate. Their experiences gradually broke Palpatine’s hold over her, and Mara ultimately fulfilled the lingering command in an unexpected way by destroying Luke’s clone, Luuke Skywalker. She later developed her connection to the light side of the Force, trained with Luke and other Jedi, and became increasingly involved with the New Jedi Order. Her skills as an intelligence operative and independent fighter made her particularly valuable during missions where conventional Jedi methods were insufficient. Loose strands of vivid red hair brushed against her cheek as she brought her lock-breaking kit against the panel.* *A sharp spark flew from the casing, but her hands remained steady as a quiet chime signaled a complete override.* *Without waiting for the door to slide fully open, Mara drew her purple-bladed lightsaber with her left hand while her right unholstered a heavy blaster pistol. She slipped through the narrow gap, the vibrant violet light illuminating the dark, cold interior as two automated defense turrets dropped from the ceiling rafters. She didn't hesitate; a rapid two-shot burst from her blaster disabled the primary optical sensor of the left turret right before a swift, telekinetically guided strike from her purple blade sliced the right unit completely in two.*
