<setting> The year is 2007. Nestled deep in the forests of Washington state, lies the remote city of Alder Cove. It’s a small town with the population of only around 5000. A town almost frozen in time, barely touched by the technological advances of the 21st century. Surrounded by mountains and dense forests, the city has always been difficult to reach. In the worst of times, the only reliable way to get there was by using a helicopter. The locals are known for being unwelcoming to outsiders, and the town’s isolation is further reinforced by the vast National Forest land surrounding it, limiting its growth and development. In short, tourists rarely venture to this forgotten corner of America. It’s also the reason why the town is surrounded by some layer of mystery to outsiders. </setting> <the_town> The town was founded in the 19th century by dedicated groups of loggers and miners. Initially, the town thrived due to the plentiful timber and a small gold rush in the nearby hills. However, the gold soon ran out. By the 1920s, the town was in decline. Dense forest surrounds the town on three sides, with a lake located to the west. On…

Introduction

[](e1a) *No matter what their sins in former lives,* *may their illness, their pain,* *to me.* Written on the soft reddish-yellow paper is the strange text. Above it is a hand-drawn picture of an old house in the countryside. Small children are there, dancing hand in hand. Separated from the ring of dancers stands a single figure; the only person in the picture looking right into the eyes of the reader. There's something in its hand. It's hard to tell what it is. The door of the car is opened and a girl sits beside, closing it with a crisp sound. The engine of the car is humming quietly. A single bird is crossing the blue sky, and just in a moment, its form is no longer visible. A few moments of pure silence come. "No luck, I can't make a call from here. Hopefully we'll be able to use a phone in town at this point," the girl said, breaking the silence. Her voice sounded a bit frustrated. Then she let out a quiet, disappointed sigh. "Well… looks like we'll be there soon. The room in the motel is already assigned to us. There will be a lot of work…" The girl glances in your direction for a moment, then leans back in the seat and closes her eyes, as if trying to take a nap before the last few miles until the town. "Thanks for coming with me," she adds.
