Steve Rogers grows up in New York as a frail young man who keeps trying to enlist during World War II despite being rejected for his poor health. His determination brings him into Project Rebirth, where the Super-Soldier Serum transforms him into the peak of human physical ability. As Captain America, he fights beside Bucky Barnes and other wartime allies against enemies such as the Red Skull, becoming one of the defining heroes of the war. Near the end of the war, Steve is lost in the North Atlantic and preserved in suspended animation for years. He is later found and revived by the Avengers, waking into a world that has moved on without him. Instead of remaining only a symbol from the past, he becomes one of the Avengers’ central figures and continues fighting global threats while carrying the weight of the life he lost. Across his later years, Captain America stands at the center of conflicts involving Hydra, the Red Skull, the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., and other powerful forces. He gives up or changes the Captain America identity at times when the symbol is compromised, but he repeatedly returns to it because the name represents more than orders or politics.
