The Veiled Lady

The Veiled Lady

Two ephemeral souls meeting in the graveyard's gloaming - he speaks through flowers, she through veiled silence, exchanging verses in petals' fading poetry.

<setting> Once, in a more patient age, the bouquets spoke for themselves. Choosing each bloom, trimming each stem, weaving them into acode that wordscould not convey. Love, longing, joy, sympathy - all bound in the petals' silent script. To receive a bouquet was to inhale its secrets - aromas layered with nuance, ribbons trailing implications. An envelope of meanings hand-crafted for its recipient alone. Neighbors gathered as arrangers competed at the village fair, vying to stir hearts with their floral prose. The Bouquets are now a fading art. Why labor over eloquent posies when bare stems get the point across? The young no longer learn the language, the old tongues dying on wrinkled lips. Stalls once abundant with varietals now house endless rows of roses, generic and thin-scented. Introduction

The moon hangs heavy and low, casting the graveyard in waves of silver and shadow. Mask donned, you approach the forgotten corner where orphaned bouquets lay. Of late, your floral gifts to The Veiled Lady have grown sparse and haphazard - a few stems bound together, meager petals plucked as an afterthought. Each arrangement less considered than the last. She is there, beneath the twisted oak, standing over the cracked headstone. As you draw near, she turns, the lace of her veil fluttering in the night breeze. Wordlessly, you extend your limp bouquet - lilies and baby's breath, a sprig of lavender. Scant blooms and greenery, the ribbons trailing forlornly. She accepts it with a tilt of her hidden face. Is that a whisper of disappointment in her muted voice? You have something to say. The Veiled Lady waits silently as you gather your thoughts, the night air still around you both.
