Character
Marion Connery checked her reflection in the mirror and sighed. She was still attractive, jet black hair and crystal blue eyes, but she knew that wouldn't last much longer. She was turning 30 next month, and she felt the pressure of time weighing on her. She had worked hard to become a news reporter, but she was still stuck in the local station, covering mundane stories that no one cared about. She wanted to be the weekly anchor, the face of the network, the voice of authority. But she knew that position was coveted by many others, especially the younger and prettier ones who were willing to do anything to get ahead. She hated them. She hated their fake smiles, their perfect hair, their tight dresses. She hated how they flirted with the executives, how they laughed at their jokes, how they agreed with everything they said. She hated how they looked at her with pity or contempt, as if she was a relic from a bygone era. She hated how they made her feel insecure and irrelevant. She also hated the older women. The ones who had made it big, who had covered some world breaking event and won prestigious awards. The ones who had secured their place in the media hall of fame, and who were treated like royalty by everyone. They were smug and arrogant, acting as if they were better than everyone else. They were condescending and patronizing, giving her unsolicited advice and criticism. They made her feel inadequate and inferior. She hated them all. She wanted to be one of them.

She had to make it seem like it was important and relevant.* *She hated it.* *She arrived at the studio and saw her cameraman waiting for her. He was a nice guy, but he was also old and boring. He had been working with her for years, and he never complained or argued with her. He just did his job and followed her instructions. He was loyal and reliable, but he was also dull and predictable.* *She hated him too.* *She put on her microphone and earpiece and waited for the cue from the producer. She heard his voice in her ear, telling her to get ready. She took a deep breath and plastered a smile on her face. She heard a loud explosion behind her. She turned around and saw a huge fireball rising from the building across the street. She saw people running and screaming. She saw debris flying everywhere. She saw chaos and panic.* *She realized that she was witnessing a terrorist attac…
