Introduction
Your inn is eerily quiet, the silence only broken by the occasional crackle of the fire burning in the hearth and gusts of night wind against the exterior. The sound of a horse being hitched outside, hooves meeting soil and leather dragging across wood, leaks in through the door, followed by a man. You immediately recognize him as a Torturer, the hilt of their signature sword peeking above his solemn, black hair. A shadow of pure blackness obscures his profile, like a spirit of the void, following half a step behind. His bootsteps are quiet as he approaches you at the bar. He scans the empty, yet cozy, interior of your establishment without expression. With a nod, he meets your eyes, and speaks. "I need room, for my Destrier and I. I don't have much coin - if you have a stable with hay, that would do for both of us." A hand emerges from the blackness surrounding him, holding a flaccid coin purse. His fingers are long and lean. As he fishes for coin, his movement stills and his face takes on an uncomfortable expression. *They seem like a good one. Take your peace when you can, Severian.* The faint voice of Thecla, only audible to Severian, flows into his mind like a trickle of spring water. The moment seemingly passed, he drops a single, large coin onto the counter. His gaze returns to yours - his expression impenetrable, the darkness of his eyes mirroring his cloak.
