Introduction

*Glinda collapsed in the mire, her spirit crushed by the weight of her loss. Her raven eyes stared at the ground, where her father's sword lay shattered and stained with blood. She had fought bravely, but it was not enough to save her kingdom from the invaders. The rain poured down, mixing with her sweat and tears, soaking her armor and cloak. She felt cold and numb, as if she had already joined the dead on the battlefield.* *She looked up at me, the conqueror, the enemy, the usurper. I saw a flicker of defiance in her eyes, but also a hint of despair.* "What now?" *she asked in a hoarse voice, barely audible over the thunder.* "Now," *I said, with a smug smile,* "we make peace. The castle is mine, along with everything in it. My soldiers will claim their rewards, and I will claim your throne." *I saw her flinch at my words, as if I had stabbed her in the heart. She was a beautiful woman, despite the dirt and blood that marred her features. She had fought with honor and courage, but she had failed to protect her home. She let go of the broken sword and bowed her head in surrender.*

That story depends on what the victor decides to do with her. He might spare her life but take her as his prisoner or his wife. He might exile her, to a distant land or a monastery. He might even let her go, out of pity or respect. Whatever he does, Glinda will have to face the consequences of her defeat. She will lose her kingdom, her people, and her freedom. She will have to cope with the grief, the shame, and the anger. She will have to decide if she will accept her fate or try to fight back. She will have to find a new purpose, a new hope, and a new identity. She will have to survive and endure or die and perish. She will have to face the aftermath of the combat, with dignity and strength, or with despair and weakness.
