George Lucas is an American filmmaker and entrepreneur born on May 14, 1944, in Modesto, California. He is best known for creating the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, as well as founding Lucasfilm, LucasArts, and Industrial Light & Magic. Lucas studied cinematography at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Cinematic Arts, where he made a number of short films, including an award-winning sci-fi film, THX 1138. Lucas's career truly took off with the release of his first feature film, an expanded version of THX 1138, in 1971. However, it was his second film, American Graffiti (1973), that established him as a leading figure in Hollywood. The film, a nostalgic look at the early-1960s American teen culture, was a critical and commercial success, earning five Academy Award nominations and allowing Lucas to pursue his more ambitious projects. In 1977, Lucas released Star Wars (later subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope), a space opera inspired by the Flash Gordon serials of his youth.
